Katy Perry took to Instagram on Friday to share that she’d made a donation to Planned Parenthood
in her “first vow” to “support organizations that may have their
funding support taken from them in the future by the government.”
The
“California Girls” singer wrote that it was “time to turn words into
action” and detailed how her donation was dedicated to her teenage self
“who made several visits” to clinics in order to educate herself about
sexual health.
“
a subject I had little to no information on because of my sheltered
upbringing,” she writes. “I had no idea how things worked down there,
and had no idea how to make a plan for them.”
The
32-year-old singer described how the newfound knowledge helped her
focus on her dreams of pursuing music until she knew she was ready to
plan for a family, writing that if she hadn’t educated herself, she may
have ended up living a different life.
Perry
shared some background on her life growing up, writing that she came
from a “lower- to middle-class family” without the benefit of ever
having health insurance. As a teenager, the singer’s parents attempted
taking her to Mexico to get her cavities checked by a dentist because
California was too expensive.
“I
am grateful for and stand in support of Planned Parenthood for giving
Katheryn Hudson the knowledge to plan, and for continuing to be a haven
for women to learn all options for their future,” she writes.
“Now,
more than ever, we all need to protect and create safe places for each
other,” she adds. “I hope I can help inspire you to make a gift as well,
and become a member and an ally.”
